Char Siew Pie in Sunbeam Pie Magic

Sunbeam Pie Magic
Sunbeam Pie Magic

My children prefer char siew pie more than char siew bao. Char siew bao is actually barbecued pork bun which is more commonly known by everyone. I have a Sunbeam Pie Maker which comes very handy whenever I have leftover meat dishes like curry chicken, beef stew and beef rendang.  I will use these meat dishes as fillings for my pie and my family loves them. By doing this, I do not waste any food and they get eaten up in a different form –  pie.

Sunbeam Pie Magic provides a cutter for you to cut out the pastry. Use shortcrust pastry for the base of a pie and puff pastry for the top.

The larger cutter at the base will be used to cut shortcrust pastry and the smaller cutter on the top will instead be used to cut puff pastry. This is an easy job and my kids love to do them. It is like playing with playdough.

You will need to preheat the Sunbeam Pie Magic until the green light appears. When you switch it on, it will have a red light.

Here is a recipe for char siew:

Ingredients for marinade:

700g of chicken thigh fillet  I did not use pork because I did not have any in my fridge.

3 tbsp of hoisin sauce

2 tsp of crushed garlic

3 tsp of light soy sauce

1/2 a cup of sugar

1 tbsp of Chinese cooking wine

1/2 tsp of Chinese five spice powder

1/4 tsp of salt

1/4 tsp of pepper

For glazing:

2 tbsp dark soya sauce

2 tbsp honey

2 tbsp oil

Methods:

Mix all the ingredients for marinate and pour it over the  chicken thigh and marinade it for at least 30 minutes. If you have the time you can marinade it longer.

In the meantime preheat your oven to 220 degrees Celcius.

Brush the chicken thigh fillet with the glaze mixture and bake it for 10 minutes and then turn the chicken thigh fillet over. Brush the other side chicken again with the glaze mixture and bake it further for another 10 minutes.

Then take the chicken thigh fillet out from the oven and set it aside to be cool down.

Next cut the chicken thigh fillet into smaller bits and then put them into a pan.

You can add some peas and the sauce that was collected while baking just now into the pan. Cook it over a small flame. Give it a good stir.

You will need to preheat the Sunbeam Pie Magic until the green light appears. When you switch it on, it will have a red light.  Place the cut shortcrust pastry moulds into the pie maker moulds, just make sure that the pastry overlaps slightly where the incisions are made.

Divide the chicken thigh fillet and peas mixture evenly, scoop at least 1/3 cup of filling into each mould and then top with puff pastry moulds.

Finally, close the lid of the pie magic and cook the pies for about 7-10 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown.

Once they are ready carefully remove pies from the pie make with a wok turner.
